Welcome to Fourth Grade!

Learning is fun with the fourth grade team!!!
Ms. Pierson, Mrs. Nelson and Mr. Hatlevig are the fourth grade teachers that   make children excited about learning.

We teach Reader's, Writer's, and Math Workshops. Children are expected to read everyday for 30 - 60 minutes at their current reading level. They use a variety of strategies to understand unfamiliar words and phrases. Students who love to read become adults who love to read!

In Reader's and Writer's Workshop we study fiction, narrative writing, non-fiction,  procedural, author study, poetry, and reading like a writer. Students complete a piece of writing after each of these units of study that follows

that genre.

We have the Everyday Math series that we teach daily. There are a lot of wonderful activities to go along with each unit-including games. The activities reinforce the concepts that are being taught. Each student daily spends ten minutes studying the multiplication facts with an exciting computer program called FasttMath.

Environmental Science is incorporated into reading, math and writing as much as possible. Each week we do an Inquiry lesson where our students explore a topic such as ponds, water cycle, electricity, magnetism, and human body.  Then the children write what they learned, questions they still have,

and what aspects they would like to study farther, in their very own science notebook.

The big 4th grade event is the Science Fair! Every 4th grader completes a Science Fair project in class. The students work with a partner or team to  develop a science experiment that incorporates the science topics taught in 4th grade. They complete the experiment, write up their findings, create a display board, and finally present their project at the Battle Creek Science Fair. The kids love this experience! The learning is exciting, the cooperation is valuable, and the presentations are priceless!

We'll see you in 4th grade!
